Drawbacks

Along with those benefits, there are also some potential drawbacks to using credit:

  • It can be expensive. Unless you pay the full balance each month, you will end up paying more for items that you buy with a credit card instead of with cash. Every month until you have paid off your card balance, the credit card company charges interest on what you owe. The longer it takes you to pay off your account balance and the more late fees you incur, the more your credit card purchases will cost you.
  • It can cause worry and stress. Owing more than you can afford to repay is likely to make you worry constantly and interfere with your sleep. It may also cause you to begin abusing alcohol or drugs and become depressed, and it may drive a wedge between you and your spouse or partner. Certainly, stress caused by too much debt often affects job performance.
